Healing Trauma With Yoga

The etymology of trauma is a wound – wounded. This can be both physical and emotional.

Trauma and stress are defensive reactions (where we fight, flight or freeze). This response is still being activated (or rather, re-activated) even though the actual experience is over.

To physiologically ‘let go’, we must touch in again. The way out, is to come in. And that might mean coming into the fear away from the numbing. Be curious. You are safe.

Trauma is not at surface level, it is deeply rooted. This is why repetition is so integral to the healing process. We will come back to the tools and techniques that work best for us, repeating the practice of letting go.

In this way our trauma becomes a pathway for deeper self-discovery, and development of our ability to let go.

What To Expect

We will explore how different ways of focusing the mind can impact our whole experience, both internal and external. Easing our way into meditation(s), in a safe and nurturing space.

We will create communication within our body by interpreting how we are really feeling, and regulating ourselves, especially when stimuli comes up.

Gentle yoga ideal for supporting emotional processing, reducing stress & anxiety while reconnecting back to you and increasing flexibility & confidence open to every-body.

Patterns that grow

There are no expectations, no judgement. Just allowing yourself the permission to open up and continue your journey.

An opportunity to start to feel again, but first, invite space to integrate the physical body.

This will look and feel different for every-body.

Trauma and anxiety

Yoga has a direct effect on the nervous system, energising or calming. Activating the sympathetic nervous system, for safety, we can learn new ways to protect the self – through active asana, pranayama and deep relaxation.

Meditation is powerful, there is no one size fits all. We will practice in ways that work for you.

Trauma lives in the body and this is why yoga is so effective as it is a body based therapy.

Creating balance and stability on the matt for safety and off the matt into the rest of our lives.

Gentle Yoga

Through a safe and gentle yoga practice there can be significant reductions in the pain sensors that originate from traumatic stress.

Getting to know your body is vital, and once this starts to get practiced mindfully the body starts to open up.

Connecting the internal and external through exploratory movement and rest. Invitation of feeling into the sensation. Slowly, intuitively, curiously.

Mindfulness

Whether you are feeling an emotional or a physical trauma, the two are very closely connected. Working with our sensory world to understand out perceptions and feelings. Mindfulness can reverse negative patterns of thinking which is a powerful tool to unveil and heal.

The practice of connecting back to the present moment, noticing what is going on and how we show up and react.

FAQ

I have not practiced yoga before and have injuries, will this work for me?

This style of yoga is guided by your body. The practice is explored from a bottom up process rather than top down.

Meaning, there are not expectations of you. Learning to listen to sensations from inside of your physical body, moment to moment.

The practice is 100% tailored to you, supported every step of the way. We can explore the practice in a chair as well as on the ground on a yoga mat.

I have worked with a range of people presenting with a range of conditions. It is important the practice is comfortable for you.

I have lost confidence, feeling more anxious by the day, can this help?

Anxiety can be a bi product of un resolved trauma(s) and so by going to the source of our discomfort, in a safe and responsible way, we can help reduce anxiety and so we can feel empowered and resilient in daily living.

When working with me I will share practical tools and techniques to self sooth and self regulate when you need to most.

Through these programmes you will be able to transform emotional trauma & turbulence into emotional resilience.

I have been to lots of therapy in the past but nothing has seemed to help me the way I wanted. Why is this practice different?

Unlike other therapies, this is not talk therapy. We do not go into the story of the past, we do not bring up and think about the reasons why we are in the session.

Instead, we work in the present moment, using the physical body to release trauma(s) in a gentle and nurturing way.

Please note, there are a lot of great insights and benefits talk therapy can provide, however that is not the way I work.

I feel disconnected from myself, my body, my partner, even my kids. Can this help me?

When we go into overwhelm we can start to dissociate. Dissociation can evolve into numbing of the physical body and then other areas of our life.

If we feel as though we ‘zone out’ then this can be an indication that areas of our physical body we can no longer actually feel. Noticing that is okay, this is a gentle practice of interoception.

When we regain our agency – which is our fundamental needs being met, we can cultivate safety in our body, our community and generally safe in the world.

When we start to prioritise our self care, which we will through integration of techniques, we will find ourself able to connect more with ourself, each other – especially the people we care about the most.

Peta

I found this course beneficial for my physical, mental and spiritual self. I no longer feel as though I am ‘living outside of myself, safely back in’. My life has been impacted positively re: relationships, work and confident choices to get back out there!

I enjoyed the first experience of the online programme with the reading material. This helped to expand my experience and knowledge.

This course has gently opened my experiences, I have benefitted from it greatly and I am safe in my body again.

Nicole

I found this course 100% beneficial. I wasn’t aware of how much emotional stress my body was holding and the intense physical tension it was causing – nor how hard it was for me to be kind to myself.

This course, combined with specialist therapy has made me feel lighter emotionally and physically; safer and more understanding of myself.

I feel so blessed to have found you and this type of yoga – it has truly been life changing and thank you feels far too inadequate for what you have given me… but it is all I have so ‘Thank You’

Tracy

I found the course beneficial and I feel more in a slow emotion, which helped me to focus.
